Artist In FLUX

Flux Studios, a contemporary art space in Mt. Rainier, MD housing the professional studios of five artists and a small informal gallery space, hosts artists from the US and abroad for residencies ranging from two weeks to three months as part of our visiting artist program.

Meinir uses porcelain and mixed media to create work that explores issues of intimacy and eroticism.  Her work created during her residency will be on display at Flux Studios from December 12- February 2, 2010. To learn more please visit www.fluxstudiosdc.com.

The first installment of the weekly Artomatic Happy Hours is coming up this Wednesday, August 5th. Participating artists and fans will be there.  It gets crowded so get there early.

Absent from last year’s calendar, it’s good to see Fraser putting this one back into rotation. If nothing else, it’s good for the health and hopefully growth of Artomatic, D.C.’s largest annual art show.”

Friday:

2:00pm – 4:00pm: Looking for something for the kids on a Friday afternoon?  Clown, face painter, and balloon artist Karen Holiday will teach a workshop for children ages 5-9 on how to make collage paper art dolls.  Head to the Utrecht Art Supply Education Room (8th Floor). RSVP at www.artomatic.org/kids

7:30pm – 10:30pm: The newly formed DC School of Beer will be presenting short informative talks followed by tastings of a variety of beers. The talks will be held at half past the hour from 7:30-10:30pm.  Free beer: need I say more?! Held in the James Renwick Alliance Education Room (4th Floor).

8:00pm – 2:00am: Art in Fashion is Artomatic’s runway event for models, choreographers, dancers, models, drag performers, and more.  Check out the collaborative, non-mainstream, carnival-like event that combines the creative efforts of these artists. There will be musical performances, a runway show, and a closing party until 2:00am.  You’ll definitely want to check this out!

Saturday:

*** On Saturday, July 4th, Artomatic will close at 10:30pm instead of at 1 am. ***

12:00pm – 2:00pm: Need a 4th of July activity for the kids that doesn’t involve heavy drinking and crowds? Come by Artomatic for some Independence Day-themed face painting and art making.  Held in the Utrecht Art Supply Education Room (8th Floor). RSVP for children ages 5-9 at www.artomatic.org/kids.

1:00pm – ???: The Nationals (their stadium is right next door to Artomatic) has a game against the Braves on Saturday.  Despite earlier cancellations, fireworks displays will go on as planned for this 4th of July.  According to Washington City Paper, “fireworks [will be] used during the National Anthem, when the team takes the field, and during the Nationals’ homeruns and victories.”  So head to the top floors of Artomatic for an amazing pyrotechnic display!

2:00pm – 4:00pm: Okay, this is going to be slightly crazy, but totally cool.  There is a mural along each wall of the Kids room (8th floor) and we need all hands on deck to paint it. This huge project is brought to you by the community organization, Albus Cavus, that installs community murals throughout neighborhoods.

7:00pm – 8:00pm: Part-time artist, part-time activist, and full-time DC resident Princess of Controversy is one of the best female emcees out there.  She’ll be performing her soulful and conscious hip-hop on the Cabaret Stage (2nd Floor). See below for a live video of her track “Fly Away.”

Sunday:

4:00pm – 4:50pm: Alt-country artist Mary Battiata perfoms with her band, Little Pink, regularly in the DC metropolitan area.  She has a sweet sound and will be gracing the Cabaret Stage (2nd Floor) with her awesome voice and electric guitar.  Check out some tracks on her website.

10:00pm – late: Since this is the last day of Artomatic 2009, join us for a closing afterparty at Molly Malone’s (713 8th Street SE).  There will be light finger food, a cash bar, and a chance to meet a bunch of the Artomatic participating artists and volunteers.  We hope to see you there.
