Weekend Roundup: June 19-21
Only three weeks left to check out Artomatic! Grab your friends and drag them to the Navy Yard metro stop after work. Tell them that there’s plenty of food, booze, and stuff to see. You can also watch a Nats game without paying for a ticket (you can see the stadium in full view from the upper floors).
Here’s a roundup of some of the exciting stuff happening this weekend:
Friday:
7:00pm – 8:00pm: Tour Artomatic with Steve Saff, the building’s architect. Steve is an artist himself and has a unique perspective on the space and art. Don’t miss it! Meet in the lobby.
9:00pm – 11:00pm: Come to the the SunTrust Screening Room (3rd floor) to check out highlights from this year’s DC Shorts Film Festival.
Saturday:
2:00pm – 3:30pm: Artomatic artist Paul Sikora leads a mobile-making workshop for all ages in the Utrecht Education Room (8th Floor). If you are interested, please RSVP at www.artomatic.org/kids.
5:00pm – 5:30pm: Did you miss Carnaval this year? Then get your fix and swing by the Dance/Theatre Stage (6th Floor) to see some amazing Brazilian Samba moves presented by DC’s very own Zezeh Brazil dance troupe.
7:00pm – 9:00pm: Two hours of the best short horror films from Spooky Movie, The Washington, D.C. International Horror Film Festival. The 4th Annual Festival will be coming to town from October 21-25, so you’ll be able to catch a preview of some of the titles, including “Attackzoids,” “Prombies,” and “Night of the Hell Hamsters.”
9:00pm – 9:50pm: Drop the kids off on another floor and come to the Cabaret Stage (2nd Floor) to check out Libertine Burlesque. Combining theater, parody, and sometimes striptease, burlesque all-star Shortstaxx and my personal favorite, Bambi Galore, are sure to tease, please, titillate, amuse and satisfy. You won’t regret it. This show was standing room only last year.
Sunday:
12:00pm – 7:00pm: Get your shop on at the Artomatic art fair! Twenty of our Artomatic visual artists will set up and sell their work in a marketplace on the first floor. You can choose from painting, photography, mixed media, sculpture, masks, ceramics, papercrafts, and more. This is the only time during Artomatic that you can buy art and bring it straight home, so if you need a quick art fix, this is the place! The marketplace also takes place on June 28th.
1:00pm – 2:00pm: Rain Young, a current Artomatic visual artist, will host a workshop in which kids will make their very own sock puppet. Come a little early for her puppet show. Held in the Utrecht Art Supply Education Room (8th Floor). Open to ages 5-9. RSVP at www.artomatic.org/kids.
6:00 – 9:00pm: Did you miss your prom or waste it crying in the gym bathroom? Get revenge at the artist social Zombie prom. Dress in your best prom or zombie attire and makeup. See your fellow artists as you’ve never seen them before. Held on the 7th floor. The undead can dance, too!
We’ll see you there this weekend.

Also, don’t forget that Artomatic is hosting the Art in Fashion show on Friday July 3rd, from 8:00pm – 2:00am. We are still looking for participants for the past-paced performance. So if you’re a fashion designer, choreographer, dancer, hair/makeup artist, or model, show us what you’ve got and cast yourself in the spotlight! Email artinfashion@artomatic.org for more information on casting.

Are these events free?
Yes, admission to Artomatic is 100% free! (But we do accept donations, and welcome volunteers.)
i am an art student at the art institute and im looking for a part time position. Are they hiring at artomatic? I know you mentioned volunteers…….thats why I am inquiring.
Vonette, Artomatic is completely volunteer-run. There are amazingly talented, dedicated people who make this huge event happen, and it’s a great experience to be part of.
You guys haven’t listed the Guiles & Wiles show on the 6th floor dance stage on Friday the 19th as part of the weekend roundup….makes it kinda hard to send folks to it…..
Sorry, there’s a ton going on and we can’t list it all! Here’s the complete list of weekend events: http://artomatic.org/events/calendar
Thanks for the shout-outs and mention! Looking forward to rocking the Cabaret Stage again this year! XOX
Let’s not forget the rest of the lovely ladies that will be in the show! There is Lil’ Dutch, Oui Oui Non Non, Anna Steasya, Coco Monroe and Delia Aces.
It’s going to be a star studded show!
Revelation to me: This morning’s Washington Post Reliable Source says a dozen artists received a buck from the anonymous “Benefactor.” I got one too, but since I have work in several area venues at the moment, I didn’t know where it came from. I love it! I took the note at face value and pinned the dollar up in my studio to remind me during times when nothing is working that I have an anonymous FRIEND out there. Thank you, Benefactor!!
PLEASE POST! An important event for Sunday, June 28th:
CHALK4PEACE is a project that is very near and dear to my heart. On top of being an Artomatic artist, I am an art therapist, art educator in Fairfax County Public Schools working with regular ed students and students with emotional disabilities, AND the East Coast Coordinator for CHALK4PEACE, Inc. So, in light of what is going on in the world today, PLEASE come out and help us show the world how important peace is. How important it is to encourage each other and our youth to speak of and envision peace in our lives so we can put it into action in our daily lives. I’m hoping it will catch on and spread like wild fire!
On SUNDAY, JUNE 28th, Artomatic and CHALK4PEACE will welcome you in peace. Be a part of the largest worldwide outdoor chalk art project. Come join us and draw your ideas and images of peace on the front sidewalk outside the Artomatic building.
Sunday, June 28th
12pm-3pm
@12 meet upstairs in the 8th floor education room and we will head down around 1pm ish
Artomatic Building
55 M Street, SE
Washington, DC
Navy Yard Metro- Green Line
12-1pm: For younger artists, Story Time: THE PEACE BOOK and some sketching time to get ideas down.
1pm: Participants, young and old, are invited to head down to the sidewalk and chalk it up with peace!
I could REALLY use some HELP so if you’d also like to volunteer to help during the event or in any other way, please let me know. DONATIONS are also a BIG help. Even a small donation of $5 goes a long way. It will provide chalk for a few youngsters in needy areas anywhere in the world to draw their images of peace.
Thanks for all the support so that we can continue to paint the planet the colors of peace!
PEACE!!!
