I know, I know, the weather this weekend is shaping up to be warm, sunny, and generally lovely. You were planning on sitting out on your friend’s rooftop all day drinking PBR. But if you know what’s right for you, you’ll forgo sitting outside and getting sunburnt to check out all the amazing stuff happening at Artomatic.
We’ve got a ton of live music, performance, workshops, and art for you. We’ve got bars on every floor (nine!) for those of you of boozin’ age. We’ve got plenty of activities to keep you and your kids distracted and entertained.
Check out some highlights from our events calendar to help you choose from this weekend’s packed lineup:
Friday:
7:00pm – 8:00pm: DC’s local Mittenfields will be gracing the 1st floor Electric Stage with their own brand of indie pop. Check out “Cut to the Chase,” a fun and upbeat track, on their MySpace page.
9:00pm – 11:00pm: Surprise! (a.k.a Katie Desmond) will be doing her trademark hooping and fire dancing right outside the building. Don’t worry, you’ll be safe. She’ll be repeating her performance on Saturday from 8:00pm – 10:00pm in case you miss her the first time.
Saturday:

12:00pm – 2:00pm: Need to keep the kids entertained before they ship off to summer camp? Check out Saturday’s mask making workshop in the Utrecht Art Supply Education Room on the 8th Floor. Anthony Delfin of Mask Appeal will facilitate. All supplies will be provided – you should just RSVP to save a spot for your child here.
4:00pm – 5:00pm: Learn from the best: slam poetry workshop for teenagers from ages 10 to 18. Facilitated by former National Slam Champion Gayle Danley. RSVP here. Held in the Utrecht Art Supply Education Room on the 8th floor.
10:00pm – 11:50pm: Remember last year’s Craigslist! The Musical? Well, the amazing DC Burner Choir is back with another hilarious musical comedy. This year it’s Flush Gordon and the Criminal Union of Nefarious Treachery and it’ll be held on the 2nd floor Cabaret Stage. Watch as Flush Gordon and Joe the Plumber travel through the magical Portal Potty to stop The Flasher from rounding up a band of evil-doers threatening to put an end to Artomatic!
Sunday:
12:00pm – 7:00pm: Get your shop on at the Artomatic art fair! Twenty of our Artomatic visual artists will set up and sell their work in a marketplace on the first floor. Visitors can choose from a wide variety of art including painting, photography, mixed media, sculpture, masks, ceramics and papercrafts. This is the only time during Artomatic that visitors can buy art directly from the event and bring it straight home, so if you need a quick art fix, this is the place! The marketplace also takes place on June 14, 21 and 28.

Voodoo Pharmacology
8:00pm – 9:30pm: Want to check out some totally weird psychedelic music? Then head on over to Voodoo Pharmacology at the 1st floor Electric Stage. “The Legend of Pete Bombascinto” is a good track on their MySpace page.
12:00am – 12:30am: Okay, these guys seriously rock. Check out Nobody Can Dance on the 1st floor Electric Stage and get a taste of what Time Out NY calls some “fun, funky tunes.”
Clearly there’s a ton going on at Artomatic this weekend. Come visit, take photos, and add them to the Artomatic Flickr pool!

Artomatic is an awesome event and the SAPAN Institute is excited to perform June 6 at 6pm and showcase some of DC’s best South Asian dance performers. We invite everyone to come check us out on the 6th floor Dance Theater to see some great Bhangra and Bollywood dances. Thanks to Artomatic 2009 for giving us this opportunity to share our art with the community!
